Graduation day 1957, some 64 years ago, our ROTC unit was lining up for
the Commencement ceremony. After Decker, Peter was called it was
clear that he was conspicuous by his absence. I ran to his dorm, found
him soundly asleep, and shook him repeatedly. I finally got him up, helped
him get dressed in his uniform with his cap and gown over it, and
hustled back to our graduation. “Mission Accomplished”
Peter very generously always gave me credit for his graduating from
Middlebury that day!
