The Utes Must Go – Henry English

A number of years ago at a party in New York celebrating the release of his newly published book, THE UTES MUST GO, Peter Decker, who is married to my dear friend and cousin, Deedee, presented me with a copy. I had long been interested in the plight of the American Indian, but was not familiar with that of the Utes.

I read his wonderful book with much interest. One day, on a family trip to Aspen, in August, 2009, I broke away and book in hand drove to Meeker, where, as is my wont, I visited the various sites and wallowed in what had taken place at each.

Several years later Peter called to suggest I attend a dedication that coming September, 2015 at Milk Creek Battlefield Park. He introduced me to Joe Sullivan, a co-founder of the Park; we immediately hit if off. I decided to record video of the event thinking there might be the germ for a documentary. Indeed, I have been developing one ever since. Peter was exceedingly supportive, introducing me to others, who in turn opened doors for me.

If and when my film lifts off, it will be dedicated to Peter and Joe Sullivan, who died 4 years ago. Both had such an effect on the trajectory of my life, which as been all but consumed by interest in the Utes.

In celebrating Peter’s life, I thought it appropriate to present a video of his speech at the dedication of the new Gazebo at Milk Creek, September 26, 2015, Here is the link:
