Trip to Bradford – Hugh Marlow

Winter exams were over. It was midnight and Peter said “Let’s go see
Phyllis.” Peter had a Plymouth station wagon. He said he would drive.
Approximately one hour into the four hour trip, he said he was too tired to
drive. He stretched out in the back and fell sound asleep. I drove.

Despite the snow, the hour was in our favor and I got us to Haverill Mass
without any problems.

Phyllis was attending Bradford College located in Haverhill. We arrived to
find the College in exam week which meant no visitors. We saw a variety
of female students wandering in and out of the dining room in a variety of
dress and they were startled to see two males. Peter and I ended up
getting a room in a local hotel.

Phyllis came to get us late afternoon and escorted us to campus for
supper, even though no men were allowed. We ended up dressed in knee
socks, skirts, our own sweaters topped with bandanas on our heads. We
were escorted into the dining hall surrounded by students who shrouded
us from faculty and staff who were also there for supper. After supper, we
escaped undiscovered and returned to Middlebury.
